The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) 2008 Annual National Conference, held April 20-23, 2008 is the premier event for professionals in the distance learning industry. Academic Advising at a Distance!
Bobbi Thomas, Assistant Director of Student Services and Senior Academic Advisor for the Washington State University Center for Distance and Professional Education will offer a three-hour short course to help advisors get ready for the fall semester. Washington State University has offered adult learners the opportunity to take complete degree programs at a distance for more than 14 years, each semester advising more than 3,000 students via the telephone and through e-mail. Bobbi will share Washington State’s insights on the role of distance advisors and walk participants through the distance learning advisement process.
The short course will require participation in two 90-minute webinars over two consecutive Fridays, May 18 and May 25, 3 - 4:30 p.m. Central time. Enrollment is free but participation is limited to the first 23 registrants.

Friday, April 6, 2007, from 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Karen Bowser will be hosting an Online Student Support workshop at Angelina College. Mickey Slimp will demonstrate options and strategies for providing Online Student Orientation, Online Advisement and other best practices.
South Plains College will be hosting a best practices workshop on “Supporting First Generation Students” on Friday, April 20, 2007, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., on the Levelland campus in the Sundown room.
The workshop will cover best practices in how to deal with the barriers to college for first generation students. Specific topic areas include cultural differences, family support, understanding the importance of college, and how to support the needs of students once they arrive on campus. Specific emphasis will be placed on dealing with first generation students in the distance learning environment. Practical information and ideas will be shared that will support all areas of student support services. Your colleagues across the state of Texas have been invited to attend.
